Simple carbohydrates are made up of one or two sugar molecules which can be easily broken down & absorbed as Glucose in blood stream. They spike up the sugar level. Since they are easily digestible, your body demands more food which ultimately leads to eating more than required, thus putting up undesirable weight. Some foods that contain simple carbohydrates includes processed foods, candy, syrups & beverages among others. They do not contain slow digestive elements such as fiber & lack nutritional value. However, some healthy foods that contain simple carbohydrates include fruits & milk.
On the other hand, complex carbohydrates are made up of longer chain of sugar molecules, which takes considerable time to digest. As such they do not raise sugar level like simple carbohydrates do. They contain fiber that helps body to maintain metabolism level, thereby helping you to avoid overeating. Some of the good foods that contain complex carbohydrates include brown rice, quinoa, barley, oatmeal, other whole grains, starchy vegetables, sweet potatoes, corn, and legumes (kidney beans, chickpeas).
Whole Grains, legumes & starchy vegetables provide fiber to the body which control cholesterol level & are important for intestinal health. While planning for a healthy diet, one should prefer to consume more of complex carbohydrates with rich fiber content such as vegetables, dairy products, whole grains & legumes.
Hence, it becomes evident that complex carbohydrates are better alternatives for healthy lifestyle & weight loss.
