Dangerous side of Soy Consumption

We all consider Soy as a great source & essential part of a healthy diet. Soy or tofu paneer is a most sought after food item given that it is low in calorie & an excellent source of protein. Hold on! Do you know that Soy has negative & dangerous impact on your overall health & its consumption should be monitored & controlled specifically for those suffering from thyroids. 

Even lot of doctors & medical practitioners are not aware of the ill effects of soy & in fact recommend soy as part of diet. Do you know that soy is potent goitrogenic food & its consumption suppress thyroid function

Fermented soy in small quantities as practiced in traditional Asian cultures is ok if you have a healthy thyroid function. Only miso, tempeh & naturally brewed soy sauce fall under this category. It is fine to have small pieces of soy or tofu in your salad. However, make sure that you do make it a regular part of our diet.

Here are the reasons why you should reduce consumption of soy:

  1. Having 2 TBL per day of roasted soyabean on regular basis by healthy folks who are consuming an adequate amount of iodine as a part of their diet have faced the problem of suppressed thyroid function with symptoms of malaise, constipation, sleepiness, and goiters.
  2. Dietary estrogens in the form of soy foods were found to have the potential to disrupt the endocrine system with the effects in women similar to taking the breast cancer drug tamoxifen.
  3. Having consumption of more than 1 cup of soya milk or ½ cup of soya flour by premenopausal women can lead to delayed menstruation.
  4. The soy isoflavones genistein appear to stimulate existing breast cancer growth indicating risk in consuming soy products if a woman has breast cancer.    
  5. Pregnant ladies should avoid consuming soy!  Scientific research has shown that the developing male fetus which is exposed to soy phytoestrogens may suffer from prostate cancer later in life.
  6. Soy protein powder strips masculinity in females. It can lead to drop on serum testosterone.

Those suffering from thyroid should reduce the consumption of soy & restrict it to once to twice a week not only than 3 to 4 cubes of soy per day.
