A proper digestion process depends upon H2 balance or what we call Hydrogen economy. When we follow a low carb diet with high protein &/ or high fat, it causes imbalance in H2 production & consumption. Low carbohydrates leads to reduced production of Butyrate( short chain fatty acids) & increased colon acidic pH level- a thriving ground for Methanogen & Sulphate Reducing Bacteria(SRB). This results in gut dysbiosis. Methanogen(Archaea) in case of moderate colon pH level & Sulphate Reducing Bacteria in case of alkaline pH level picks up hydrogen to release Methane gas & Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S) respectively.
If you have high methanogens- Archaea, it causes overproduction of methane which decays intestinal cells, disrupting nutrient uptake, resulting in slow food motility & causing bloating, gassy & constipation. This leads to IBS-Constipation & Crohn’s disease.
On the other hand, if you have more of Sulphate Reducing Bacteria, it causes overproduction of hydrogen sulphide, reduces oxidation of Butyrate( Beneficial short chain fatty acid),leads to gassy, Diarrhea, fatigue/low in energy & disruption in gut barrier, thereby leading to Ulcerative Colitis.
